This Summer, TONO x PAMMTV Selects Dives Into Shapeshifting Video Art

From the cell to the pixel, TONO x PAMMTV Selects explores how bodies transform across natural, supernatural, and virtual spaces. The evocative streaming exhibition from Pérez Art Museum Miami is co-curated with TONO, a new video and performance art festival in Mexico City.

Participating artists biarritzzz, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, Seba Calfuqueo, Leo Castañeda, Cristóbal Cea, Colectivo Ixqcrear, Edny Jean Joseph, (La)Horde, Carlos Motta, Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau, Agnes Questionmark, and Tania Ximena move through the atomic to the cosmic, bursting discrete definitions of a body.

The 12 works in the streaming exhibition range between two to 41 minutes, showcasing boundary-pushing media artists from Mexico, Chile, Guatemala, Haiti, Colombia, Brazil, and beyond. Anyone in the world can access the exhibition for free by visiting www.pamm.tv and creating an account.

In Resurrection Pro League, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley builds upon the legacy of text-based games, glitch graphics, and community archives to reimagine bodies in virtual space. A successful search for the ancestors of Black trans people leads to their resurrection in a digital archive called The Black Sea, where others can visit and benefit from their presence. Soon, however, trans tourism takes over, and Black trans history is appropriated and exploited.

Seba Calfuqueo expands upon these polyvalent containers for our anatomies in Kowkülen (Liquid Being), offering an intimate performance where the body melds with a flowing river in Araucanía to counter the logic of privatization that governs water in Chile.

Guatemalan filmmaking collective Colectivo Ixqcrear continues to explore this transformational power between earth and the human body in La fuerza que emancipa al cuerpo, healing the spirit of subjugated women who have survived gender-based and colonial violence through the lens of Q’eqchi’ Maya women.

Landscapes, bodies, and technologies further fuse in Leo Castañeda’s animistic video game flythrough. Camoflux Mangrove Biome reimagines energy infrastructures in games through 3D-animated biomes influenced by Latin American abstraction and ecologies.

Blending live-action footage and digital cinematography in Second Life, biarritzzz uses the pacing of a crime thriller to follow a Brazilian woman who made history as a famous stripper in the metaverse until she disappeared upon losing her password in Onde Está Mymye Mastroiagnne?

TONO x PAMMTV Selects is on view in the Pérez Art Museum Miami auditorium and online via PAMMTV™ through October 14.
