MassArt’s MFA in Studio Arts is designed to equip artists with the knowledge, expertise, and perspective they need to create meaningful and engaging artwork. In this program, students refine their technical and conceptual skills, and collaborate with peers and faculty across the college. Faculty members are committed to providing support and critique as they help students develop a unique viewpoint and voice as a maker. To better reflect how it cultivates this community of co-learners, the program recently changed its name from MFA in 2D/3D to MFA in Studio Arts, with concentrations in Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture.
Dean of Graduate, Professional, and Continuing Education, Mariah Doren, explains; “The new MFA in studio art brings students from across the country and across the globe. Together they develop a 21st-century studio practice based on personal vision, imagination, and a responsive understanding of the contexts in which we work. Students choose an area of concentration balanced by shared courses where they explore history and contemporary practice and contexts as they hone the skills for establishing a vibrant and sustainable studio practice.”
Ensuring students learn the strategies to keep that sustainable studio practice, especially post-graduation, is embedded in the program’s structure. “MassArt set me up for success in my career by encouraging me to push beyond my limits and achieve artistic goals I never imagined possible,” writes Magda Leon, class of 2024 alumna. “They provided me with the tools and training to present my work with confidence, humility, and professionalism.”
Fall 2025 applications are now being accepted for the MFA in Studio Arts program at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) in Boston.
