Mazda has set out its intentions to increasingly electrify its future model range, but confirmed it will continue to offer hybrid and internal combustion options for customers up to 2030.
The Japanese brand will have its own dedicated EV platform in 2027 and this will underpin its future electrified models.
Mazda is working with Panasonic, Toyota, Changan Automobile, Denso and BluE Nexus to incporporate their technologies and expertise into future models.
As a result, Mazda said it is actually reducing its EV development investment from ¥2 trillion (£10.3billion) down to ¥1.5tn (£7.7bn) as a result of leveraging these technology partnerships.
A new electric SUV built on the new EV platform will be available in 2027.
Next-gen CX-5 will be hybrid
However, the next-generation of the CX-5 will be available as a hybrid underpinned by Mazda’s Skyactiv-Z technology.
Mazda confirmed it will stick with hybrid technology for its smaller products over the next few years in the run up to 2030.
At a Mazda Multi-Solution Briefing Session held in Tokyo, president and chief executive Masahiro Moro said: “Mazda will continue to provide customers with the right powertrain sources, ensuring great driving experiences for years ahead.
“This strategy will ensure that Mazda’s vehicles are equipped with the most suitable powertrain options, whether internal combustion engines, hybrids, or battery EVs, tailored to different driving environments and customer needs.”
