Filled with 80% down and 20% feather fiber for just the right amount of fluff, this down duvet is a high-quality, ethically sourced product that’s suitable for year-round use. It also comes in a wide range of dimensions, from a palatial king size to a dorm room-worthy twin.
The Puredown includes 93% goose down, but it comes with a very warm fill power of 800 and baffle-box construction to ensure that your comforter is perfectly proportioned with feathers from corner to corner. The pinch-pleated design and 100% cotton shell also makes it more suitable as a standalone comforter.
For more security, there are eight corner tab loops attached to this comforter, making it easy to attach a cover. That being said, it’s made with a 100% cotton cover, so you can use it as a comforter or duvet insert with a cover. Keep in mind this one is filled with 90% duck feathers and 10% duck down.
And if you’re allergic to down or just want a topper that avoids animal byparts, this sub-$50 hypoallergenic comforter has more than 95,000 five-star reviews to its credit. The down alternative duvet insert is machine-washable, so it works well as a duvet insert.
How We Chose These Comforters
When pulling together a list of comforters for this list, we zeroed in on comforters that we had already tested first, from Buffy to Boll & Branch, then filled in the gaps with other well-reviewed contenders. For options we hadn’t personally tested, we tried to select ones that had at least 100 reviews among them (if not thousands), where shoppers indicated that their purchase was well-made, warm, and fairly easy to take care of.
Across the board, we considered the following factors in our rankings and categorizations:
- Exterior construction: It’s ideal to look for a comforter with squares stitched into it that also has side walls. This is called baffle-box construction, which means each chamber has an equal amount of fill and the side walls prevent the fill from shifting. A baffle-box comforter will never be totally flat in one corner while the other is full and fluffy. We also considered alternative types of stitching (see the Buffy Breeze) that would achieve the same effect.
- Exterior fabric: Soft, high-quality cotton and airy lyocell goes a long way for breathability so we prioritized ones made from these materials.
- Fill power: The higher the fill power, the warmer the comforter. We aimed to select a range of down and down-alternative options that would suit different types of sleepers.
